KOSPI Surpasses Bitcoin in Volatility as Samsung and SK Hynix Drive Index
The South Korean benchmark KOSPI has reached a historic milestone in volatility. According to Bloomberg data, its year-to-date return swings have surged to 63%, surpassing Bitcoin's 48% reading as of July 31, 2026.
This marks a striking reversal: the national stock index now out-volatilizes the asset long branded the world's most unpredictable. KOSPI's volatility has been driven by the concentration of Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix stocks in the index, which account for over 50% of its market cap.
The latest evidence of KOSPI's volatility came on August 3, when it plunged more than 20% from the open, erasing roughly ₩1.1 trillion in market value and triggering circuit breakers. However, the index rebounded by 25% intraday, swinging nearly ₩2 trillion in a single session.
The concentration of Samsung and SK Hynix stocks has also led to increased volatility in Korean leveraged ETFs, with total assets growing from around $5 billion to $40 billion year-to-date. This amplifies both rallies and liquidations, making KOSPI's volatility resemble that of a high-beta altcoin.
