Kraken Exchange Crippled by Flood of Tiny Sanctioned Transactions

A recent dust attack on Kraken exchange has highlighted the strain that tiny transfers can put on compliance systems. The incident, which occurred between August 17 and August 24, saw nearly 12,000 transactions worth only a few cents flood into Kraken-linked addresses.

The majority of these transfers were associated with a wallet linked to HTX, according to Arkham Intelligence. While the amounts were negligible, they triggered automated screening due to sanctions data.

Kraken froze some accounts as a result, citing concerns over the spread of sanctioned funds and potential compliance reviews on other platforms. The exchange has since restored access to affected accounts but is continuing to hold onto the sanctioned funds.

HTX pushed back against Arkham's label, denying any involvement in the transfers and stating it would investigate whether the associated address was misattributed or controlled by a malicious third party.
