Kraken Exchange Hit by 'Dust Attack' as Compliance Systems Falter Under Low-Value Transactions
A recent 'dust attack' on cryptocurrency exchange Kraken has highlighted the vulnerability of compliance systems to low-value transactions.
Nearly 12,000 tiny transfers, each worth only a few cents, were made to Kraken-linked addresses between August 17 and 24.
The transfers, which are designed to be ignored by traders, triggered automated screening on the exchange's compliance systems.
Kraken froze some customer accounts as a precautionary measure, but later restored access after determining that the funds were indeed sanctioned.
The exchange is holding onto the funds rather than releasing them back into circulation, citing the need to ensure compliance with regulations.
