Solana Cuts Block Confirmation Times in Half
Solana's mainnet has achieved a significant milestone by reducing block confirmation times across its network. In a recent update, the network's target was adjusted from 400 milliseconds to 350 milliseconds in the first staged slot-time reduction.
This change is part of Solana's efforts to improve its speed and efficiency. The new timing applies when epoch 1020 began on August 21st. Epochs are fixed periods of 432,000 slots, with a slot being the window in which a designated validator can produce a block.
Trillium, a Solana validator-telemetry provider, measured a significant reduction in slot times. In post-change epoch 1021, Trillium recorded a mean slot time of 365.4ms across 431,505 timed slots. This is compared to a pre-change reading of 420.7ms in epoch 1015.
The faster slots also reduced the number of skipped slots, from 0.438% in epoch 1015 to 0.077% in epoch 1021. While this change may indicate an early stability signal, it's essential to note that the comparison cannot establish causation between the timing cut and the reduction in skips.
