Kraken Executive Sees Regulated Digital Finance as Key to Cyprus' Economic Growth
Kraken's executive in Cyprus believes that regulated digital finance can become a significant contributor to the country's economy, creating skilled jobs and supporting its role as an EU fintech hub.
Cyprus-based Stavros Vassiliades, COO and Executive Director of Payward Europe Digital Solutions (CY) Ltd., says this could create a new pillar for the island's economy alongside tourism, shipping, and professional services.
Kraken's European operations are centered in Cyprus, with its CySEC-regulated Cypriot Investment Firm playing a crucial role in its European derivatives business. The company also uses its MiCA hub, authorised by the Central Bank of Ireland, for spot crypto trading in the EU.
Vassiliades notes that larger jurisdictions may offer greater scale, but Cyprus provides regulatory clarity, talent, and a supervisor that engages substantively and constructively. He highlights the importance of MiFID II and MiCA frameworks, which govern different products and ensure consumer protections such as appropriateness and suitability tests.
