Kraken Fights Sanctioned Funds with 'Dust Attack' Manipulation

Share

Kraken, a digital-assets exchange, recently detected what it calls a 'dust attack' on its platform. The incident involved small transfers of cryptocurrency from a wallet linked to HTX, a sanctioned rival, aimed at triggering compliance checks by spreading sanctioned funds.

The unwanted transfers temporarily locked out some customers from their accounts, highlighting the challenge of policing crypto flows and preventing manipulation attempts.

Kraken noted that the apparent goal was to trigger compliance checks by sending small amounts of cryptocurrency to users, making it difficult for the exchange to identify and block sanctioned funds in real-time.
