Kyobo Life and SBI Group Pioneer Stablecoin-Based Cross-Border Fund Transfers
Kyobo Life, a South Korean insurer, has become the first company in its country to verify a structure for institutional fund transfers between South Korea and Japan using stablecoins with Japan's SBI Group. This pilot project aims to bypass traditional intermediary currencies like the US dollar, making cross-border transactions faster and cheaper.
The companies used the Canton Network blockchain platform to test a direct exchange of yen-based stablecoins for won-based stablecoins when transferring funds from Japan to South Korea. By removing the need for intermediate foreign-exchange steps, the pilot demonstrated significant potential for cost savings and processing time reduction.
According to Kyobo Life officials, the pilot confirmed the technical feasibility and efficiency of using stablecoins and blockchain for cross-border institutional fund transfers. The companies plan to continue their cooperation on linking digital-asset foreign exchange and asset management between South Korea and Japan, while exploring new business models based on real transaction structures.
The success of this pilot project may pave the way for greater adoption of Web3 finance in the region, enabling smoother and more efficient cross-border transactions. Kyobo Life aims to expand its cooperation with SBI Group and proactively respond to changes in Web3 financial infrastructure.
