Lagarde Blocks Binance EU License Amid Stablecoin Concerns

The European Central Bank's (ECB) influence on crypto regulations has come under scrutiny after reports emerged that President Christine Lagarde personally asked Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to reject Binance's EU license application.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Lagarde cited Binance's US guilty plea and concerns over stablecoin risks for the digital euro as reasons for her opposition. The exchange had already cleared the technical review process in Greece and was close to approval.

The ECB does not have a formal veto power under the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework, but Lagarde's request effectively stalled the application through political channels. Binance eventually withdrew its file before any formal vote, avoiding a documented rejection that would have followed it into other member states.

The incident highlights the tension between central banks and crypto exchanges over regulatory issues. The ECB is building the infrastructure for a digital euro, but private stablecoins could pose a competitive threat if they gain widespread adoption in the EU before the central bank's own project launches.
