$LAPTOP Memecoin Launch Sets Stage for Crypto Clash Between Bidens and Trumps
Hunter Biden, son of former US President Joe Biden, is launching a memecoin called $LAPTOP. The token's name comes from Hunter's infamous laptop, which was subject to media scrutiny before his father's election in 2020.
The memecoin's launch is scheduled for Wednesday, and 20% of the one-billion token supply will be sent to substack subscribers, members of a mailing list, and investors in President Donald Trump's memecoin, Official Trump (TRUMP). $LAPTOP has dropped by about 97% since reaching an all-time high price in January 2025.
Since his father left office, Hunter Biden has been vocal about crypto and blockchain, criticizing the Trump family's entanglements with the industry through its World Liberty Financial business. He called it 'corruption at a scale we've never seen' in August, comparing its practices to those of defunct exchange FTX.
The $LAPTOP founders will hold 30% of the token supply and may burn up to 30% depending on events such as a Democrat winning the presidency in 2028 or Bitcoin reaching an all-time high. The launch could shine more light on Trump's crypto ventures, which are set against the backdrop of lawmakers considering a comprehensive market structure bill.
