LAPTOP Memecoin Loses 99.8% Value After Unintended Trigger
Hunter Biden's anti-Trump memecoin, LAPTOP, has seen a significant decline in value since its peak. On September 9th, it reached a record high of $199.51, but as of now, it trades at around $0.38, representing a drop of 99.8%. This decline can be attributed to the token's unique mechanism, where 30% of its supply is tied to public predictions about real political events.
The mechanism triggered twice recently, resulting in the burning of 10 million tokens, valued at approximately $3.56 million at the current price. The trigger was set off when Eric Trump and digital artist Beeple publicly mentioned the token, settling two bets and burning 5 million tokens each. Hunter Biden confirmed both events, leading to the removal of 1% of the total supply from circulation.
Beeple and Eric Trump did not buy or endorse LAPTOP; they simply mentioned it in a public conversation. This unusual mechanism has put the token's fate in the hands of the American political calendar, rather than the project team's control.
