Japanese retailer Lawson is expanding its stablecoin payment pilot to include USDC and USDT in addition to JPYC, which was already being tested. The company is conducting two proof-of-concept trials this month at Tokyo stores, starting with the Lawson Takanawa Gateway City store on August 6th, where invited participants will use HashPort Wallet with JPYC.

The second trial, scheduled for August 17th at the Lawson Gate City Osaki Atrium store, will allow customers to pay with USDC, USDT, or JPYC using MetaMask. The pilot aims to evaluate the speed and efficiency of stablecoin payments through existing point-of-sale (POS) systems without requiring dedicated payment terminals.

Lawson's POS system will connect directly with digital wallets, processing settlement data through Canal Payment Services' PAYTREE gateway before confirming transactions. The company is examining day-to-day store operations, including POS integration and settlement procedures, to determine whether the system can operate smoothly in a retail environment.
