LayerZero and TACEO Enable Private Cross-Chain Token Transfers with Merces Integration
LayerZero and TACEO have integrated their technologies to enable private cross-chain token transfers. This integration aims to address one of the remaining pain points in on-chain finance - transparency. With Merces, a privacy layer developed by TACEO, token transfers across blockchains can now be made without revealing participant identities or transfer amounts.
The core mechanic behind Merces is deceptively simple: it wraps standard ERC-20 tokens into private virtual accounts using secret sharing. This allows balances to exist on-chain while keeping plaintext data confidential. Under the hood, Merces relies on multi-party computation (MPC), a cryptographic approach where multiple parties jointly compute a function over their inputs without revealing those inputs.
The integration of Merces with LayerZero's cross-chain messaging infrastructure is significant because it addresses the need for institutional-grade privacy in on-chain finance. According to Cameron Nili, LayerZero's Banking & Capital Markets Lead, this fills the remaining privacy gaps in cross-chain transfers.
