LayerZero has launched ATLAS, a new financial infrastructure system designed to power exchange backends. Built on the company's Zero blockchain, ATLAS is aimed at trading platforms and financial institutions.

ATLAS operates as a 'headless' backend, allowing trading venues to control their own front-end apps while ATLAS handles matching, clearing, settlement, and risk management. The system comes in two flavors: Open ATLAS for public crypto markets and Institutional ATLAS for operators needing custom access rules.

ZRO secures the Zero network through delegated proof-of-stake and can unlock trading fee rebates of up to 65% for venues that stake it. This expanded role for ZRO is a significant development, as it now functions not only as the network's gas and governance token but also as a key component in securing trades on ATLAS.

LayerZero has promised sub-millisecond median latency and plans to provision the system for 200,000 transactions per second at launch. However, whether ATLAS can actually hit these targets under live trading conditions remains to be seen.
