Leveraged ETF Market Sees Record Closures Amid Robust New Product Launches

The leveraged ETF market has seen a record number of closures in April 2026, with over 20 funds shutting down due to underperformance and lack of investor interest. Direxion was among the issuers that pulled the plug on ten ETFs, including two crypto-adjacent products: LMBO, a leveraged bull fund that gained around 34% before its closure, and REKT, the corresponding bear fund that fell over 31%. The closures are concentrated among newer, smaller funds that never gained traction.

However, certain established products have demonstrated real staying power. Crypto-themed leveraged ETFs tracking MicroStrategy and Coinbase continue to trade despite recent market turbulence. Products like MSTX, MSTU, and CONL have survived the April 2026 wave of closures, illustrating a key point about the leveraged ETF market: performance alone is not enough to keep these funds alive.

According to Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas, the closures are a necessary correction rather than evidence that investors are souring on leveraged strategies. Issuers continue to launch new products at a record pace, with issuance remaining robust even as closures accelerate.
