Lido vs Rocket Pool Staking Battle Heats Up Post-ETH Surge
The staking landscape between Lido and Rocket Pool has evolved significantly following the surge in Ethereum (ETH) staking. Lido dominates the market with a total value locked (TVL) of $33 billion, while Rocket Pool holds approximately $4 billion. Lido’s stETH stands as the most liquid staking derivative in decentralized finance (DeFi), with strong integrations in platforms like Aave, Curve, and MakerDAO. In contrast, Rocket Pool’s rETH offers a decentralized alternative, appealing to users who prioritize censorship resistance over liquidity.
Liquidity differences between the two protocols are stark. In June 2022, stETH traded at a 7% discount to ETH when liquidity on Curve thinned, but it recovered within weeks. Rocket Pool’s rETH uses a value-accruing model, where the exchange rate against ETH increases as rewards accumulate, making it easier to integrate into smart contracts compared to Lido’s rebasing stETH. Many DeFi users prefer Lido’s wrapped version, wstETH, due to its fixed balance, which simplifies use in smart contracts.
Fee structures and reward models also differ. Lido takes a 10% fee on staking rewards, while Rocket Pool’s node operators charge a 14% commission. As of late May 2026, Lido’s net stETH annual percentage yield (APY) ranges from 2.4% to 2.6%, while Rocket Pool’s rETH offers around 2.2% after node-operator commissions. Rocket Pool’s Saturn 1 upgrade in February 2026 improved capital efficiency by allowing operators to run 4 ETH megapool validators instead of the previous 8 ETH minipools, enhancing scalability.
Concentration risk remains a critical concern. Lido controls roughly 24% of all staked ETH, raising fears of a single point of failure. Rocket Pool mitigates this through a permissionless node operator network, where anyone can become an operator by bonding ETH. EigenLayer restaking adds another layer of risk, as users expose their liquid staking tokens (LSTs) to additional slashing conditions from Actively Validated Services, potentially increasing returns but also risks.
For users prioritizing liquidity and DeFi integration, Lido’s stETH is the preferred choice, as it serves as the default staked-ETH collateral on major lending markets. Conversely, Rocket Pool is ideal for those valuing decentralization and censorship resistance. The choice ultimately depends on user priorities between liquidity and decentralization.
