Lido, a liquid staking provider, has announced that MetaMask Staking is exiting its Ethereum validators due to a security incident. The incident has led to a 45-day estimate for the re-entry of affected ETH, but Lido assures stETH holders that no action is required and that ETH will return gradually.

The exit process, which began on September 30, 2026, is expected to be completed by October 7, 2026. The measures taken by MetaMask Staking may result in foregone rewards and potential downtime penalties for validators taken offline to reduce network risk.

Lido emphasizes its diverse Node Operator set and security measures to mitigate disruptions, including an ad hoc reserve of over 6,750 stETH. However, the incident highlights the importance of operator risk in liquid staking, and the need for operators to prioritize infrastructure security and continuity.
