Lightning Network Surpasses $1 Billion in Transaction Volume
The Lightning Network has experienced significant growth in recent years, with transaction volume reaching $1.17 billion in November 2025, representing a 266% year-over-year increase across 5.22 million transactions.
This growth is largely driven by the expansion of Strike's partnership with Starbucks, which now exceeds BitPay's merchant volume. In contrast to previous years, users are transferring larger sums between exchanges rather than making small daily purchases.
The average Lightning transaction reached $223 in late 2025, and the network has seen a decline in node counts from a peak of 20,700 in 2022 to 17,438 in May 2026. However, this reduction did not significantly impact capacity, which remained steady at around 4,900 BTC.
The Lightning Network faces ongoing structural issues, including inbound liquidity and management requirements for routing fees. Despite the introduction of Taproot Assets and USDT support in March 2026, users often rely on workarounds to reduce on-chain fees.
