Lionesses Prove Strength is Not Just About Physical Power
National Geographic's documentary series 'LION' challenges traditional views of strength and leadership in the animal kingdom. The four-part series follows Kio, a lion cub's journey to becoming king, but it's the lionesses who are at the heart of the story.
Filmmaker Faith Musembi notes that for generations, stories about lions have centered on the male lions, with their majestic manes and commanding roars. However, in 'LION', the lionesses take center stage as they hunt, nurture, protect, make difficult decisions, and work collectively to create a safe environment for their pride.
Musembi, who also worked on another National Geographic series 'QUEENS' focused on female-led animal societies, emphasizes that the lionesses are not just passive caregivers. They are strong individuals who make sacrifices for the good of their family, often walking away from what is familiar to give their young a better chance at survival.
The documentary highlights the distinction between physical strength and emotional strength, showing how the lionesses' internal fortitude allows them to make difficult decisions that benefit their pride. Musembi notes that this type of strength is one that many women can connect with, particularly those who have had to walk away from what they know for the sake of others.
