Liquid Network Hack Exposes Risks in Cryptocurrency Infrastructure

Share

The latest hack on the Liquid Network has dealt another blow to cryptocurrency's reputation as it tries to convince banks and institutional investors that digital assets can be part of mainstream financial infrastructure.

The $320 million hack highlights the risks in the layers surrounding a blockchain, including wallets, custody arrangements, and transaction infrastructure that users rely on. Nikhil Raghuveera, CEO of Predicate, a blockchain compliance provider, said, 'Continued exploits reinforce to global fintechs and institutions that decentralised finance is still not ready for prime time.'

The hack also exposes the vulnerability of decentralisation, which was once touted as one of cryptocurrency's greatest strengths. By removing central authorities responsible for reversing mistakes and safeguarding assets, the system leaves users dependent on fragmented infrastructure that malicious actors can attack.

This year alone, 250 attacks have resulted in over $1.4 billion lost, with 26 of these assaults targeting bridges and cross-chain infrastructure. Cross-chain links are a critical component of DeFi, enabling the automation of moving and converting different types of digital assets.
