Whitehat vs Blackhat Crypto Hackers: Understanding the Distinction
Crypto whitehats and blackhats are often discussed as if they share the same goals, but in reality, their objectives and methods differ significantly.
A crypto whitehat hacker is a security researcher who finds vulnerabilities with the intention of reporting them to the project team so that they can be fixed before users lose money. Whitehats work within an authorized disclosure or recovery process and are typically rewarded for their findings through bug bounties.
On the other hand, crypto blackhat hackers exploit weaknesses in systems for financial gain, often by stealing assets, gaining unauthorized access, or extorting funds from project teams. They may use various methods to achieve their goals, including exploiting flaws in smart contracts, compromising private keys, or manipulating employees through social engineering.
One of the key differences between whitehats and blackhats is their authorization to operate within a system. Whitehats are authorized to test for vulnerabilities under a bug bounty program, while blackhats operate without permission and often conceal their exploits until they have secured funds or made demands.
