Liquid Network's $320M BTC Heist Sparks Bridge Trust Questions
The Liquid Network has suffered a significant security breach, with nearly 4,000 BTC (valued at approximately $320 million) being taken from its Bitcoin wallet. The federation claims that the transfer was not authorized and that 'purported white-hat hackers' were involved.
An OP_RETURN message left in the Bitcoin transaction reads 'we are whitehats. contact us on chain', sparking debate about the intentions of the actors behind the breach.
Liquid uses a two-way peg between Bitcoin and its sidechain, with peg-outs gated by a Peg-out Authorization Key (PAK). However, the federation claims that the SideSwap PAK was not compromised, leaving questions about where exactly in the control path the error occurred.
The incident has raised concerns about the trustworthiness of federated bridges, particularly those used for decentralized cross-chain transactions. Blockstream's May roadmap emphasizes the need to reduce reliance on trust-based schemes and develop more secure infrastructure.
