Lloydminster RCMP Warns of Bitcoin ATM Scam

The Lloydminster RCMP is warning residents about a recent surge in fraud reports involving scammers posing as government officials or agencies. The scammers claim that victims face arrest, charges, or jail time unless they transfer money immediately.

In several cases, the scammers directed victims to withdraw funds and deposit them through Bitcoin ATMs by scanning QR codes provided via messaging apps. The police note that cryptocurrency transfers can be difficult to recover once completed.

The RCMP emphasizes that legitimate government agencies will not demand payment through cryptocurrency, Bitcoin ATMs, gift cards, or prepaid credit cards. They will also not threaten immediate arrest or imprisonment via phone, text, email, or messaging app.

Residents are advised to verify any claims before paying and can do so by independently contacting the agency through an official phone number or website. Those who have disclosed financial information should contact their bank immediately.
