Lonely Hearts Lose $9M in Hong Kong Romance-Linked Crypto Scams

A $3.3 million crypto investment scam in Hong Kong targeted an insurance agent who was fooled by a fake online boyfriend. The scammer convinced her to invest in a fraudulent application, and she eventually realized she had been swindled when she couldn't withdraw her funds.

Between July 24 and July 30, there were 25 similar romance-linked fraud cases reported to Hong Kong police, with victims collectively losing $9 million. Scammers typically connect with victims through dating or messaging apps and build a relationship before convincing them to invest in crypto.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian government withdrew its support for Malaysia Blockchain Week after an influencer featured at an after-party was found to have posted adult content on OnlyFans. The event organizers apologized and scrubbed any mention of the performance from their website.
