Long-Dormant Bitcoin Wallets Wake Up with $15 Million in Transfers
Bitcoin's long-dormant wallets are waking up from their slumber. Over the past week, four wallets that had been inactive for more than a decade transferred 202.84 BTC between August 29 and September 4. The largest transfer came first, amounting to 146.06 BTC worth around $11.31 million.
One wallet in particular has gained incredible returns: a 40 BTC stash bought at an average price of $3 in November 2011 is now valued at approximately $3.09 million, marking a staggering gain of over 2.5 million percent. Another wallet from June 2011 transferred 10 BTC, worth about $777,000, while a 6.78 BTC transfer linked to Coinbase suggests potential selling intentions.
Galaxy Research's blockchain monitoring highlighted these movements, noting that long-idle holdings represent supply that market participants may have treated as unavailable. The current wave of activity is part of a broader summer pattern identified by Galaxy Research, where Bitcoin held for 10 years or longer are becoming active at an unusually fast pace in 2026.
