Low Exchange Closure Count Defies Market Bottom Narrative
The relationship between cryptocurrency exchange closures and market bottoms is a popular narrative among crypto analysts. However, according to Joao Wedson, an analyst who has been tracking this trend, the data does not support it.
Wedson points out that nine exchanges have shut down in 2026 so far, which is the lowest count recorded in at least eight years. This number is significantly lower than the dozens of platforms that collapsed during the 2022 bear market cycle.
The closures of BitMart and BitMEX within days of each other have generated significant market commentary about what it signals for Bitcoin's price trajectory. However, Wedson argues that two high-profile closures do not constitute a trend when the overall yearly closure count is historically low.
Wedson's analysis suggests that exchange shutdowns are emotionally resonant events that create fear and give analysts something concrete to point to. This emotional weight makes them effective narrative anchors, but it does not necessarily mean that they signal a market bottom.
