LSE Prepares to Tokenize Top Stocks for Global Overnight Trading
The London Stock Exchange (LSE) is planning to offer tokenized stocks under its xStocks brand, according to Payward, the parent company of Kraken. This move aims to bolster the LSE's decision to explore its planned 24-hour trading venue, LSE 24.
Tokenized shares will be available to investors across more than 110 countries, although ironically, xStocks remain unavailable to UK investors. The top 100 London-listed equities are set to be tokenized under the xStocks brand.
Jael Hugentobler, Cryptocurrency Analyst at Javelin Strategy & Research, believes that tokenized shares could provide benefits such as around-the-clock access, faster settlement, and reduced time between trades. He also notes that the LSE could combine these benefits with regulated infrastructure, shareholder protections, and reliable pricing.
The LSE plans to introduce overnight trading in the first half of 2027 to attract international retail investors and compete with crypto markets. However, regulators will need to consider concerns about the potential risks of tokenized stocks, such as investors not understanding that they are buying a representation of a share rather than the actual share itself.
