Lummis Criticizes Democrats for Rejecting CLARITY Act Despite Memecoin Provisions
Sen. Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.) criticized Democrats for opposing the CLARITY Act, despite the bill addressing their concerns about memecoins. She noted that Democrats requested provisions to prevent memecoins from falling through regulatory gaps, which were incorporated into the bill. However, Democrats still voted against it.
Lummis attributed the bill’s failure to partisan divisions over President Donald Trump. She claimed that 126 substantive changes requested by Democrats were included, yet they rejected the bill. Democrats, led by Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), argued that the bill primarily benefited Trump and would have fueled his ‘unprecedented corruption.’
Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) opposed the bill, citing a ‘fundamental conflict of interest’ due to Trump’s crypto ventures. These include the Official Trump (CRYPTO: TRUMP) memecoin, which generated significant revenue. Trump’s 2025 financial disclosure revealed over $1.4 billion from crypto ventures, including $520 million from World Liberty Financial token sales and $635 million from memecoin royalties.
