Macro Forces Trigger $2 Trillion Crypto Market Crash
The crypto market experienced a significant downturn in 2026, erasing $2 trillion in total market value from its October peak. The decline was driven by six converging macro and structural forces: tariff shocks, equity market weakness, record leveraged liquidations, ETF outflows, technical breakdowns, and geopolitical risk.
One of the major catalysts for the sell-off was a $19 billion forced liquidation event triggered by tariff threats against China on October 10, 2025. This led to a drop in Bitcoin's price from above $126,000 to below $90,000 in the weeks that followed.
Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan described the environment as a 'full crypto winter' set into motion by excess leverage and widespread profit-taking by long-term holders. Long-term Bitcoin holders distributed approximately 3.67 million BTC during this cycle, according to Glassnode data.
