Madison City Commission Considers Approval for Simple Mining Data Center

A cryptocurrency mining business called Simple Mining LLC is seeking approval from the Madison City Commission to operate a 10-megawatt data center in the city. The facility would use four metal-sided modular structures, similar in size and structure to shipping containers, and would be located on 3.73 acres of city-owned land.

The company has worked with the Planning Commission to reduce its possible impact on the town, according to Matt Hein, Simple Mining's director of site development. 'We're trying to be as unobtrusive as possible to the community while adding some economic development to the community and hopefully getting an opportunity to connect to the local university,' he said.

The city administrator, Jameson Berreth, explained that the data center would use a maximum of 10 megawatts of electricity and could divert power elsewhere in case of emergencies. He also noted that the facility would not consume water or require a supply.
