Malaysia Blockchain Conference Drops DJ Amid Conservative Scrutiny
A Malaysian blockchain conference has faced backlash after announcing Siew Pui Yi, an influencer known for adult content, as its headline DJ for its official after-party.
The announcement sparked controversy, highlighting a cultural fault line in Malaysia between the push to promote itself as a regional technology and crypto hub and conservative scrutiny of sexualized entertainment.
The event, Malaysia Blockchain Week, initially said Siew Pui Yi would perform at the after-party on Thursday night. However, it later announced that she would no longer be performing due to an update in their event arrangements.
The decision came after the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) withdrew its support for the event and ordered organisers to remove all materials bearing the name, logo or image of the agency.
