Malicious iOS App FomoPeek Linked to $580K Crypto Heist
A malicious iOS app called FomoPeek has been linked to a crypto theft of $580,000, according to cybersecurity firm SlowMist. The app, which was available for download on the App Store, allowed users to peek at their friends' private social media accounts. However, it also had a feature that enabled users to view and copy cryptocurrency wallet addresses, potentially allowing hackers to steal funds.
SlowMist warned users about FomoPeek in April, but the app remained available on the App Store until it was finally removed earlier this month. The firm's research found that between March 21 and May 17, hackers used FomoPeek to steal cryptocurrencies worth over $580,000 from at least two wallets.
The incident highlights the risks of downloading unverified apps, especially those that require access to sensitive information like cryptocurrency wallet addresses. SlowMist advised users to be cautious when installing new apps and to monitor their accounts regularly for suspicious activity.
