Mango Shares Soar on AI-Generated Drama Premiere
Shares of Mango Excellent Media skyrocketed this week, surging 64% as investors bet on the Chinese broadcaster's foray into AI-generated content. The stock rally made Mango the top performer on the MSCI Asia Pacific Index.
The jump in shares was triggered by the premiere of 'The Later Journey to the West', China's first fully AI-created long-form television drama, which aired on August 31 under a new regulatory framework called 'review-while-broadcasting'. This model allows producers to submit episodes for approval in phases, giving creative teams room to adjust later episodes based on audience feedback.
The impact of the premiere extended beyond Mango's own stock, with shares of Kunlun Tech and China Literature also climbing. Analysts see AI-generated content as a potential growth engine for the industry, citing the success of micro-dramas - short, vertical video series popular among Chinese audiences. In the first quarter, 128,000 micro-dramas hit the market, with 95% being AI-generated.
While some analysts are bullish on the development, others warn that investors may be overlooking the commercial upside in China's AI video models themselves. Citigroup analyst Brian Gong and colleagues noted that ByteDance's Seedance remains the industry benchmark for quality, while rivals like MiniMax Group's H3 model offer near-premium output at a lower cost.
