MARA Foundation Launch Fails to Lift Sentiment Amid Crypto Dip
MARA Holdings stock plummeted over 3% in pre-market trade on Tuesday after the company launched its MARA Foundation at the Bitcoin 2026 Conference.
The foundation's goal is to support Bitcoin's long-term growth beyond mining through research, education, and open-source development, according to CEO Fred Thiel. The initiative will focus on key areas like Bitcoin security, which includes quantum resistance research, as well as open-source development, global self-custody tools, policy advocacy, and Bitcoin education for developers and regulators.
The $100,000 grant program announced by Thiel allows the Bitcoin community to vote on which organization receives the funding. The three options are the 256 Foundation, Libreria de Satoshi, and SateNet. MARA holds approximately 38,689 BTC, making it one of the largest corporate holders of Bitcoin.
Traders on Stocktwits expressed their frustration against Thiel for 'giving away' money while the stock price was struggling. The company's shares were up over 20% year to date but remain down over 22% over the past 12 months. MARA's dip comes alongside weakness in the equity and cryptocurrency markets, with Bitcoin's price tumbling nearly 2% in the last 24 hours.
