MARA Holdings, one of the largest publicly traded miners, has made an unexpected U-turn in its strategy by buying around $100 million worth of BTC. This purchase marks a reversal from the company's previous six months of aggressively selling assets to fund its expansion into artificial intelligence.

The deal was executed through FalconX's OTC desk with an average purchase price of $76,347 per coin. The transaction follows MARA's massive restructuring in the first half of 2026, during which it sold over 20,880 BTC worth approximately $1.5 billion to pay down debt and finance its new business.

MARA Holdings' return to buying comes amid intense pressure on the industry, with publicly traded miners facing a significant increase in costs due to rising energy prices. According to CoinShares, the average cost of mining one BTC for publicly traded miners soared to $75,500 in the second quarter of 2026, while the digital asset's price stood at $58,400.
