Mara Holdings Corrects Loan Repayment Confusion on $98.6 Million Bitcoin Transfer

Mara Holdings had to correct a public misunderstanding about one of its Bitcoin transactions. On September 17, 2026, the company clarified that a transfer of 1,292 BTC was a loan repayment, not a purchase.

The confusion started when on-chain analytics flagged the incoming transfer and several media outlets reported it as MARA adding to its treasury. However, Robert Samuels, Mara's VP of Investor Relations, stepped in via social media to correct the record, stating that no new Bitcoin was bought that day.

The coins had been loaned out through FalconX, and the analytics tools flagged the return at an implied average price of around $76,347 per BTC. The transfer looked like a purchase because the automated scanner didn't remember the outgoing loan. This isn't the first time Mara has had to issue this kind of correction, in June, on-chain alerts reported a 1,000 BTC addition that was also identified as returned loan collateral.

Mara's Bitcoin holdings are actively working as financial infrastructure rather than sitting idle in cold storage. As of June 30, 2026, the company held a total of 35,577 BTC, with 9,270 BTC tied up as collateral for outstanding loans. Over the first half of 2026, Mara sold between 20,880 and 23,093 BTC for proceeds ranging from $1.5 billion to $1.63 billion.
