MARA Holdings Slumps to $611 Million Loss as Bitcoin Prices Weaken
MARA Holdings, one of the largest Bitcoin miners, reported a significant loss in Q2 2026, with a net loss of $611 million. This is a stark contrast to the $808 million profit the company made in the same quarter last year.
The decline in profits can be attributed to a decrease in Bitcoin prices, which reduced the value of MARA's digital-asset holdings. The company produced 2,422 Bitcoin during the quarter, up 3% from a year earlier, but its mining output was overshadowed by the losses incurred due to lower average Bitcoin prices.
MARA's CEO, Fred Thiel, stated that 'we do not view Bitcoin mining and AI infrastructure as competing businesses.' The company has been shifting capital toward power and data-center infrastructure for AI and high-performance computing, aiming to reduce its dependence on Bitcoin's price cycles. In the first quarter, MARA sold about 20,880 Bitcoin for $1.5 billion, using part of the proceeds to redirect capital toward its AI infrastructure plans.
