Market Holding Breath as Bitcoin Falters
The cryptocurrency market is holding its breath rather than finding direction today. Hourly moves across the top 15 assets are within a few hundredths of a percent of flat, and 24-hour changes cluster between minus 2% and plus 3%. This contrasts with the year-to-date picture, which shows Bitcoin down 28%, most large caps having lost between a third and half their value since January.
The three assets in the top 15 that are still in the green for 2026 are Hyperliquid ($HYPE), up 104.60% this year with a $13.13 billion market cap; TRON ($TRX), up 15.20% year to date; and UNUS SED LEO at $9.75, effectively flat.
One explanation for the performance of privacy coins such as Zcash and Monero is that they have small floats, low volumes, and shallow order books, causing them to move less in either direction. This contrasts with large-cap altcoins like Cardano, which are down 48% year to date.
