Reddit Slams Google's AI Overviews for Crypto Visibility Concerns

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman criticized Google's AI Overviews feature during his company's Q2 2026 earnings call. Huffman argued that these summaries haven't delivered referral traffic comparable to the traditional '10 blue links' format.

The AI Overviews feature was integrated with Reddit content quoting features in May 2026, essentially pulling Reddit's own words into its summaries. This integration has raised questions about crypto content visibility on the platform, as Reddit's r/CryptoCurrency subreddit is a primary venue for retail investor sentiment and project analysis.

Reddit appears to be doubling down on direct user acquisition and product improvements designed to make the platform less dependent on Google as a traffic source. The company has also been aggressive about controlling how its data gets used by AI companies, mandating licensing agreements for firms like Microsoft and Anthropic in 2024.
