Marmot Memecoin Surpasses OnlyFans Funding in Scientific Experiment
A long-running study of yellow-bellied marmots in Colorado has faced a severe funding crisis after its federal grants were cut off. The researchers, led by Professor Daniel Blumstein at UCLA, have been studying these animals since 1962 and had their National Science Foundation funding abruptly withdrawn.
To make up for the loss of $75,000 to $100,000 per year in funding, the team turned to unconventional means. They created an OnlyFans account called 'OnlyMarms,' promising subscribers uncensored content featuring the marmots.
However, this effort only generated about $6,000, falling short of their annual goal. The researchers then looked to the cryptocurrency market for help, where a memecoin named 'OnlyMarms' was created on the Solana network without their explicit permission.
The token quickly gained traction and earned over $25,000 in just three days, more than double what they had raised on OnlyFans. The researchers are now receiving transaction fees from the token's sales, but this funding source remains precarious due to the volatility of cryptocurrencies and memecoins.
