Marshall County Warns of Cryptocurrency Payment Scam
The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a cryptocurrency scam targeting local residents. Scammers are impersonating law enforcement officers, calling individuals to demand payment for alleged warrants or missed jury duty. They instruct victims to deposit cash into a Bitcoin machine to resolve the issue, often threatening fines or arrests if compliance is not met.
Officials emphasize that this is a fraudulent scheme and urge people to never use a Bitcoin machine to settle such claims. The sheriff’s office also notes that scammers may spoof official phone numbers to appear legitimate, adding another layer of deception.
Law enforcement officials remind the public that they will never demand payment over the phone nor ask for personal information under such circumstances. If you receive one of these calls, the sheriff’s office advises hanging up immediately and contacting the agency directly to verify the call’s authenticity.
