Maryland Consultant on Trial for $55 Million Crypto Hack

A Maryland cybersecurity consultant, Jonathan Spalletta, is on trial in New York for allegedly stealing nearly $55 million in hacked cryptocurrency from exchange Uranium Finance. The hacks took place in 2021 and led to the exchange shutting down.

Spalletta has pleaded not guilty to the charges and faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted of the most serious charge against him.

The case began with opening statements on Monday in Manhattan federal court. Uranium Finance was allegedly hacked twice in 2021, resulting in significant losses for investors.
