Massachusetts Towns Crack Down on Cryptocurrency Kiosks Amid Scam Surge

A growing number of Massachusetts towns are banning cryptocurrency kiosks due to increasing reports of scams. The machines, which allow users to convert cash to Bitcoin in minutes, have appeared in hundreds of locations across the state.

At least 20 communities have enacted bans, with more considering following suit. However, local leaders say that town-by-town action can only go so far, and pressure is building on Beacon Hill to decide whether the state should impose a ban.

The Boston Globe reported that victims of these scams often have little chance of recovering their losses due to lack of oversight by Massachusetts banking authorities.

One notable case involved a Haverhill resident who was tricked into depositing $5,500 into a kiosk in July 2024. The victim's loss is just one example of the growing trend of scams tied to these machines.
