Mastercard Buys Stablecoin Infrastructure Provider BVNK for $1.8 Billion
Mastercard's acquisition of BVNK, a stablecoin infrastructure provider, marks a significant move in the company's strategy to expand its presence in global payments. The deal is worth up to $1.8 billion and comes just months after Visa partnered with BVNK to enable stablecoin payouts through Visa Direct.
The combined market capitalization of stablecoins now exceeds $300 billion, with transaction volumes continuing to rise as businesses increasingly adopt them for cross-border settlement. Mastercard believes that growth is only beginning, with Chief Product Officer Jorn Lambert stating that digital currencies, particularly stablecoins, are addressing real-world needs in areas like cross-border B2B payments.
The acquisition highlights the rivalry between Visa and Mastercard, which are both racing to build infrastructure for businesses to move stablecoins. The competitive landscape is broadening, with Stripe expanding its stablecoin capabilities, Circle building payment infrastructure around USDC, and PayPal launching its own stablecoin.
