Mastercard Cements Stablecoin Ambitions with BVNK Acquisition
Mastercard has finalized its $1.8 billion acquisition of BVNK, a digital asset technology firm that specializes in connecting traditional currency to digital currencies. The deal will enhance Mastercard's ability to support payment processing for international transactions.
BVNK's technology supports blockchain networks in over 130 countries and enables connections between traditional currency and digital currencies. Its clients include PayPal and Circle, which use BVNK's tech to scale stablecoins and sell digital wallets, cross-border payments, and merchant transactions services.
Mastercard CEO Michael Miebach believes that a world of multiplicity will emerge, with many coins and chains, requiring a trusted interoperable layer. BVNK will provide this layer for Mastercard, allowing users to transact across different coins and assets.
Visa is also developing technology to improve transaction processing for stablecoins, which are expected to be used in cross-border payments. The Open USD project, backed by banks and payment companies including BNY, Huntington Bank, and Stripe, aims to launch a dollar-backed stablecoin later this year.
