Mastercard has taken a significant step forward in enabling AI-driven transactions with the launch of early access to its Agent Pay for Machines system. This platform allows AI agents to autonomously discover services, negotiate terms, and make payments within predefined human-set spending limits. The system was showcased at Cloudflare’s Connect conference, where Mastercard’s Jorn Lambert demonstrated a live transaction, highlighting its practical application.
The technology is built on the x402 protocol, which facilitates payments through signed “payment vouchers.” When an AI agent encounters a “402 Payment Required” response, it generates a voucher that serves as a secure promise to pay within approved limits. This process allows for off-chain, high-speed transactions, with providers able to redeem vouchers in batches later.
In the demo, an AI agent for the marketing agency Hype executed a protein-bar campaign, making nine payments to two merchants without needing separate accounts or invoices. The transaction was settled via Coinbase, Base, and BVNK, supporting payments in both fiat and stablecoins. This launch follows successful pilots with Cloudflare, Ant International, AWS, BVNK, and Coinbase, and Mastercard is now offering buyer- and seller-side APIs, a toolkit, and a sandbox for developers.
The initiative is part of Mastercard’s broader push into stablecoins and AI-driven financial services, following recent launches like the Stablecoin Security risk tool and the BVNK-powered Global Money Platform.
