Mastercard's Priceless Planet Coalition Restores Over 40 Million Trees Globally
The Priceless Planet Coalition was launched in 2020 by Mastercard and its partners to restore 100 million trees. The coalition's TerraMatch model, developed by World Resources Institute (WRI), connects local restoration champions with capital and technical assistance. WRI refined the financial, project-management, and monitoring systems based on feedback from the restoration champions.
The Priceless Planet Coalition work resulted in $28 million brought to restoration champions in six countries, who planted 10.7 million trees and began restoring 7,500 hectares of land. TerraMatch uses reported metrics and satellite data to track and verify the restoration work carried out by local restoration champions.
TerraFund was launched in 2021 using the TerraMatch system to invest in 100 local restoration champions across Africa. The projects attracted more than $32 million, planted over 21.2 million trees, and brought 43,500 hectares under restoration.
