Mathematical Breakthroughs: Google's Gemini Agents Solve Five Unsolved Erdős Problems
Google's advanced math agents, powered by Gemini, have made significant breakthroughs in solving long-standing mathematical problems. The team of AI agents, using a framework called AlphaProof Nexus, found proofs for five unsolved Erdős problems and resolved 44 out of 492 conjectures listed in the Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences.
The agents use a multi-turn reasoning approach, powered by Gemini 3.1 Pro, to reason, revise, and try again until a proof is either confirmed or rejected. This process allows for the identification of novel solutions, as seen with four of the thirteen open Erdős problems solved by Aletheia.
The research highlights the potential applications of this agentic approach in fields such as combinatorics and quantum optics, in addition to algebraic geometry. However, it also notes that current AI systems still require human oversight for novelty assessment, meaning people must confirm whether a result is genuinely new.
