MegaETH Launch Challenges Ethereum Layer 2 Dominance with 10,000 TPS Claim
The Ethereum Layer 2 sector has reached a critical mass of 57 active scaling solutions, with a total value locked (TVL) of approximately $47 billion as of April 28, 2026.
MegaETH, a real-time blockchain built on top of Ethereum, is set to launch its mainnet in April 2026 with a claimed throughput of 10,000 transactions per second and sub-millisecond block times.
This launch comes at a time when the L2 landscape is more crowded, capitalized, and contested than ever before. The team behind MegaETH describes it as a 'real-time blockchain' rather than a standard optimistic or ZK rollup, with three technical pillars: a specialized sequencer node with hardware-accelerated execution, EVM bytecode compatibility without re-proving each transaction at the base layer in real time, and a separation between execution speed and settlement finality.
MegaETH's architecture produces blocks every one millisecond, giving applications a response time similar to a centralized database while retaining Ethereum's security model at the settlement layer. Transactions are batched and posted to Ethereum L1 at intervals, with the 10,000 TPS figure reflecting execution throughput, not L1 finality throughput.
The team has published benchmarking results showing sustained throughput above 5,000 TPS under load conditions representative of DeFi trading activity.
