Meme Coins Hit Record Low Share of Altcoin Market in 2026
Meme coins, once a dominant force in the crypto market, have seen their influence wane significantly. On October 5, 2026, CryptoQuant analyst Darkfost reported that meme coins now account for just 3% of the total altcoin market capitalization, marking an all-time low with a ratio of 0.027.
This decline is a stark contrast to their peak in November 2024, when meme coins made up over 10% of the altcoin market. Even earlier this year, in July 2026, the ratio was higher at 3.7%. The current low reflects a broader shift in market dynamics, where altcoins have outperformed meme coins in recent months.
Darkfost identified several factors contributing to this trend. Firstly, the steady influx of new meme coins has diluted liquidity across the market. Secondly, interest in meme coins has diminished, with the number of holders dropping to multi-year lows. Despite these challenges, Darkfost noted that past extreme divergences have sometimes preceded recoveries, such as the rally in early 2026 following a similar low in late 2025.
However, Darkfost cautioned that the current data does not definitively signal an imminent rebound. The analyst emphasized that while historical patterns suggest potential for recovery, the market's direction remains uncertain.
