Memecoin Markets Slide as Pengus Plummet 11%
Pengus (PENGU) led the decline in cryptocurrency markets yesterday, dropping by 11% as memecoins struggled. PENGU was followed closely by Pump (PUMP), which lost 8.9%, and Pepe (PEPE), down by 7.9%. Lighter's LIT and Artificial Superintelligence Alliance's FET also made an appearance in the bottom five, though their connection to memes is less direct.
According to a Bank for International Settlements working paper, investor flows can significantly impact a cryptocurrency's market capitalization. This phenomenon is particularly pronounced in memecoins, where prices are often influenced by attention, online communities, exchange listings, and short-term trading momentum.
The article notes that while Bitcoin and Ether also exhibit volatility, their markets tend to be deeper and more widely supported than those of memecoins. The latter's prices can decline rapidly once traders begin reducing exposure due to a lack of conventional reference points for valuation.
